How Much Sugarpaste Does It Take to Cover a Cake?
The amount of fondant needed to cover a cake varies depending on the size and shape of the cake. However, as a general guideline, you can use the following estimates:
- Small Cake (20 cm or 8 inches in diameter): Approximately 500-750 grams of fondant.
- Medium Cake (25 cm or 10 inches in diameter): Approximately 1-1.25 kg of fondant.
- Large Cake (30 cm or 12 inches in diameter): Approximately 1.5-2 kg of fondant.
These amounts are estimates for fondant that will cover just the top and sides of the cake. If you plan to add detailed decorations or figures on top, extra fondant may be required.
When covering the cake, try to roll out the fondant as thinly as possible; however, if it’s too thin, it might tear. Generally, an ideal thickness for the fondant is around 4-5 mm. This allows for adequate coverage while still enabling the fondant to be beautifully worked.
Just as the amount of fondant required can vary with the cake’s size and shape, the decoration techniques used and the complexity of the design may also necessitate the use of extra fondant. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to prepare a little more fondant than you think you’ll need.
